Pointed Pen Romans: Formal to Informal

Presentation by Rick Paulus

Come discover the joy of breaking free from formal letters with your pointed pen! Through a series of easy to grasp steps, Rick will gently guide the participants of this workshop through the process of creating formal Roman letters with a pointed pen and then taking those letters in a more personal direction as you recreate them using your own calligraphic voice.

Handouts and the Supply List were emailed to members.

Rick Paulus has been a calligrapher and a teacher for over forty years. He apprenticed for several years at the legendary Tolley Studios, in Washington, DC, before becoming the engrosser for the US State Department. In 1998, he was appointed chief calligrapher of the White House, where he remained for two presidents until, in 2006, he heeded the call of the wild and left Washington, DC to explore new adventures in nature and in art. Today, in addition to enjoying calligraphic explorations from his studio nestled near the shores of Cape Cod, Rick is dedicated to sharing the knowledge gained through many years of studio production and experimentation to students young and old alike. Visit Rick’s website for more images.

It’s a Sign!

How a walking lettering tour can help you find and replicate letters to expand your lettering library.

Presentation by Heather Martinez

You don’t have to go far to find letters: any city will do. It’s fun and easy to do!

From 2018–2020, Heather Leavitt Martinez held public lettering tours in conjunction with her lettering workshops for visual practitioners in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Melbourne and San Francisco.

She also hunts for letters everywhere she goes. Her favorite places in New Mexico include Tucumcari and Truth or Consequences.

In this session, Heather will share stories from her travels, how any lettering style can be broken down into the different types of calligraphy nibs you use, and instructions on holding a lettering tour. Be sure to download and print the handout (included in the email to members). She will show you how she created it and how you can to turn it into a little zine that you can use as a template to create your handout/exemplar for your next lettering workshop.

Heather Leavitt Martinez is a practical mix of fine and commercial artist. Rooted in printmaking and photography, she has worked in nearly every medium, including ceramics, sculpture, and graphic design. She also draws and has written an award-winning book. Now teaching online and small, in-person lettering classes in her studio at The ArtRoom in Durango, Colorado, Heather is known in the community as an arts advocate, coach, and mentor.

She is a lettering artist by accident but loves it fully, and it’s one of her main focuses in life. Her love of lettering has inspired her to study with master calligraphers, sign painters, and graffiti artists worldwide. She takes what she learns and translates it using Neuland tools and materials and teaches what she learns to others.

Heather has arts administration training from the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, Colorado Creative Industries (CCI). She received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and CCI to expand her art career coaching model. She has developed two platforms to deliver her work as a lettering artist and tech host. You can learn more about her online lettering classes at Let’s Letter Together! and her tech hosting training at Tech Host Academy.

Members Show & Share (via Padlet)

Write out your version of this quote in any style on whatever substrate you choose and share!

Kindness connects us. Pass it on.

Before the meeting, load images of your artwork onto the Escribiente Padlet (check your email for the link). During the meeting, you will have a chance to talk about your work. Then the wheel of fortune will be spun and a lucky member will win your piece. You will be the winner of someone else’s.

If you will not be available for the meeting, you can still participate by sharing your work on the Padlet and adding information in the caption.

On June 15th at 1:00 pm we will meet at the Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church to share the things we posted plus any small gifts you have received or given to others that feature calligraphy such as cards, books, bookmarks, mobiles, ornaments, etc. We will be featuring items by Caryl McHarney so please bring any pieces you may have received from Caryl.
